The Slave Ship (1840) is an intriguing painting about a dramatic historical event, and I just released a 2-min video discussing this work. You can find a link to the video in my bio.

This painting is also known as Slavers Throwing Overboard the Dead and the Dying – Typhon Coming On. It is based on a true story about the slave trade in the late 18th century. In this instance, 132 slaves are thrown overboard, because of illness and a lack of food and water.

And you can see some of the slaves and their chained arms in the water. A dramatic painting of a tragic historical event.

Interior of Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire (1794) is a watercolor painting by the 19-year old British artist J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851).

It shows a ruined Cistercian monastery on the bank of the river Wye between England and Wales. It shows how the ruins are in the process of being reclaimed by nature. But we can still some of the beauty of the old monastery.

This painting belongs to a class of paintings called Picturesque landscapes, which are landscape scenes characterized by roughness, variety, multiple textures, and overgrown features. It was a new genre invented in England in the 18th century.

The Slave Ship by Turner in the Museum of Fine Arts shows how a large number of slaves are dumped in the sea. If you look carefully, you can how the slaves in the foreground are struggling to survive. A gorgeous sunset with a cruel reality.

The Fighting Temeraire by Turner was voted the greatest painting in Great Britain in 2005.

After years of service, the magnificent ship went to its final resting place to be broken up. It is on display in the National Gallery in London.

J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) is one of many great artists who has painted Venice.

And while he visited the city three times, he did not mind to add some imaginary elements to his views, like in The Dogana and San Giorgio Maggiore.

During his first six-month tour of Italy, J.M.W. Turner filled 23 sketchbooks with impressions from Rome. Among them were several ones of the Colosseum. This trip would have a major impact on Turner.
