Siegfried (1921) was created by the German painter and illustrator Thomas Theodor Heine (1867-1948).

Heine is probably more famous as an illustrator than as a painter. For example, in the MoMA, there is an iconic illustration of him of a red Bulldog. But this has become an iconic painting in itself.

The small pug is placed on an oversized red chair, and I can’t help and wonder what is going through Siegfried’s mind. Does he want to go for a walk, does he want to play, or is he just relaxing.

Louis Marie De Schryver specialized in painting scenes from everyday life. Born in an upper-class family, De Schryver usually painted the grandeur of Paris combined with fashionably-dressed women. This is a more intimate scene compared to his other works, perhaps showing his daughter or another family member.

Five O'clock Tea (1895) by Edith Hayllar is a typical British scene.

It's a peaceful setting. The pot of tea, the cake, and cookies are waiting in a flower-filled room, while the woman and her dog are just sharing a relaxed moment while waiting for someone else to arrive.

Edith Hayllar (1860-1948) was a successful British artist during the Victorian era. She specialized in painting scenes from everyday life, like we see here. She had eight siblings, and three of her sisters also became accomplished artists. Their father was a painter himself and he gave his kids a rigorous artistic training from early on. Of the four sisters, Jessica and Edith became the most successful artists.

Idyll (1886) by Gerhard Munthe (1849-1929) shows a relaxing scene in a Nordic landscape.

It shows the artist's 17-year old fiancée, Sigrun Sandberg, next to her dog Bacchus. Later that year, the couple would marry so Munthe appropriately captured her in a white dress. They both seem to be in their own worlds, just taking a moment to reflect on the situation.

The white dress and, to a lesser extent, her dog Bacchus contrast beautifully with the greens of the Norwegian landscape. Except, for the few daisies, the nature consists of so many shades of green

Jean-Léon Gérôme (1820-1904) painted the Greek philosopher Diogenes the Cynic surrounded by dogs.

Diogenes believed that humans could learn a lot from dogs as dogs do not live artificially and hypocritically like people.

The Goldsmith Ladies in the Bois de Boulogne in 1897 on a Peugeot Cart was painted by Julius LeBlanc Stewart (1855-1917).

It shows a popular activity among the riches at the end of the 19th century. French people with a lot of money liked to show off their wealth and fashion in the Bois de Boulogne.

And while the automobile only became available to the masses around 1914, these carts were not an uncommon sight in the forest.

You can see these two ladies enjoying their ride, flaunting their dresses, their car, and their purebred dog (which was also very fashionable). And by painting their surroundings with very soft colors, Stewart made sure that, also in this painting, they are the center of attention.

Never Mind (1907) was painted by Arthur John Elsley (1860-1952). It shows three girls, three kittens and a Saint Bernard. Elsley loved to paint these carefree scenes of childhood.

The children and animals don't worry about the start of a new year. For them, it's just another day to enjoy.

Elsley really loved animals, and if you look carefully at this painting, you will see that he put much more effort into painting the animals then the other aspects. The background is painted with relatively coarse brush strokes while the kittens and dog are painted with great precision, even more so than the children.

Alpine Mastiffs Reanimating a Distressed Traveller (1820) was painted by Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873), a British artist specialized in animal paintings.

It shows two Alpine mastiffs, sent out by monks from the Hospice situated near the summit of Saint Bernard, a mountain in the Alps in between Switzerland and Italy. They are rescuing a young man who was trapped by an avalanche while walking in the mountains.

The dog carrying a small keg of brandy around its neck tries to revive the young man by licking his hand, while the other dog paws the snow away and barks to alert his masters in the background of their discovery. And you can see the monastery of the monks on the top right.

Life Saving Patrol (c. 1893) was painted by Edward Moran (1829-1901), an English-born American painter specialized in maritime paintings.

In his work, he frequently captured the balance between the power of the ocean and the men who worked there. Sometimes the balance was in favor of the rough seas, sometimes in favor of the fishermen or the marine.

In this beautiful moonlit work, there is a balance. If you look carefully, you can see the outlines of some ships in the background. And the lifeguard is making sure no incidents happen during this night.

Edward Moran was not the only artist in the family, and you may be more familiar with the landscape paintings by his brother Thomas Moran, whose work is a bit more famous. The sons and cousin of Edward Moran also became successful painters.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was not the most radical painter, but he may have been technically the best of his generation (which included more famous artists like Manet, Monet, and Renoir).

Homer and His Guide (1874) shows the blind, ancient Greek author Homer being guided by a shepherd boy. The dog is barking and the boy has some stones in his hand to protect Homer in case the dog would become aggressive.

While the boy looks a bit worried, Homer looks distinguished. And he has a lyre on his back which he used to make music and tell some of his great stories to his audience.

And look at the details, how beautifully everything is painted. I understand that whether you like it or not is dependent on your taste, but I do believe that the very smooth and soft  elements he painted are very skillful in a technical sense.

Tumbling Apples is a fantasy painting by Hans Zatzka (1859-1945). These two ladies are having some fun in the countryside. And the dog loves all those apples flying around.

Zatzka painted these colorful fantasy scenes full with flowers and beautifully-dressed woman having a good time. His wife and two daughters were the models for his paintings.

Time to Wake Up (1883) by Charles Burton Barber (1845-1897) shows a young girl and her enthusiastic Jack Russell Terrier.

The dog named Jack is ready to play, but the girl obviously still needs some time to wake up. Burton Barber created many of these adorable scenes, and often included some subtle details in them, like the books of sheep the girl has been reading before falling asleep.

Burton Barber was a nature lover at heart and his passion was to paint scenes of wildlife. But he noticed quickly that his works of children and dogs got much more attention in the art market, and so he decided to successfully specialize in this genre.
