How many Catholic saints do you know? Saint Rosa of Viterbo (c. 1650) by the Spanish artist Bartolomé Estebán Murillo (1618–1682) is shown with her two common attributes, the crucifix and some roses. As her name suggests Rose (or Rosa) was born in the Italian town of Viterbo, and she lived between 1233 and 1251. She did not seem to make a great name for herself during her life, but she has later become known for her prophecies and special powers. I personally had not heard of this saint before coming across this painting, and in the process of reading about her, I learned that there are over 10,000 saints according to the Catholic Church. According to some sources, Saint Rosa of Viterbo was a very pious young girl, and when she was 10 years old, the Virgin Mary told her to join the Franciscan Third Order and focus on prayer and penance. She would go out on the streets carrying a crucifix, which is how Murillo has portrayed her here, to advice people to follow the Catholic religion. She would occasionally preach on the street, and correctly predicted some future events, like the unexpected death of an emperor. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #SpanishArt #SpanishPainter #SpanishArtist #Murillo #Saint #StRosa #SaintRose #Viterbo #Catholic #Saints
