A mortal man searching for forgiveness. In the Venusberg Tannhäuser was painted by the British artist John Collier (1850-1934). It is based on some European folklore dealing with Venusberg. There are many different versions of this folklore, but the general theme is that of a mortal man who is seduced by a goddess. This painting is based on a specific version of the folklore from Germany. A legendary knight called Tannhäuser becomes obsessed with worshipping the goddess Venus. He spends a year at a mountain worshipping Venus after he was denied forgiveness for his sins by the pope. However, I am not completely certain on whether Collier based this painting on that specific version of the folklore, so if you have any more information on this work, let me know in the comments. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #JohnCollier #Collier #Tannhauser #Venusberg #Venus #Goddess #Mortal #Immortal #Worship #Folklore #EuropeanFolklore #GermanFolklore
