What an incredible dress for a 14-year old. Portrait of Infanta Isabel de Bourbon (1866) was painted by the Spanish artist Vicente Palmaroli (1834-1896), who may be better known as a former director of the Prado Museum. Princess Infanta Isabel is portrayed in a lavish blue-turquoise ball gown, with lace at the ends. The small waistline, fullness of the bottom part, short sleeves, and low neckline were all the latest fashion trends. At the moment of this painting she was 14 years old, so it may have been the first time she wore such an extensive dress, something that had to be eternalized. Infanta Isabel was the daughter of of Queen Isabella II of Spain (1830-1904), and two years after this portrait, she would marry Prince Gaetan, Count of Girgenti. It would not be a happy marriage. After a miscarriage Gaetan would get into a deep depression, and three years into their marriage he fatally wounded himself. Infanta Isabel would not marry after that. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #Portrait #PortraitPainting #Bourbon #DeBourbon #Dress #SpanishArt #SpanishArtist #SpanishPainter #Palmaroli #Ball
