An unremarkable fresco that became an internet sensation. Ecce Homo (1930) is a fresco by Elías García Martínez (1858-1934) depicting Jesus crowned with thorns. At first sight, it is a fairly standard depiction of Jesus, and many others have been made. But in 2012, it became famous worldwide due to a failed restoration attempt. Swipe to the second image to see the result. The restoration became known as Ecce Mono (Behold the Monkey), because of its resemblance to a monkey, and it was shared in media worldwide. At first people thought of vandalism, but soon it was figured out what happened. Cecilia Giménez, an untrained amateur, was familiar with the fresco in the Sanctuary of Mercy church in Borja, Spain, which she attended. She noticed some flaking and decided to do some restoration herself. She had no bad intentions, it just had not really turned out the way she wanted… #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #Fresco #EccoHomo #SpanishArt #SpanishArtist #SpanishPainter #Martinez #Restoration #Fail #Failure #Monkey #EcceMono #Borja #ArtRestoration #Funny
