Can you smell the forest? Rain in an Oak Forest (1891) was painted by Ivan Shishkin (1832-1898). Shishkin was a Russian artist who lived near Saint Petersburg where he painted many of his landscapes. His landscapes have a pretty unique feel as he searched for areas with nice trees and combined that with uncommon weather circumstances. Shishkin belonged to a group of artists that formed the Peredvizhniki movement, and they aimed to capture the world in a more realistic way than the artists in the more common academic movement (who chose different themes and liked to idealize their paintings). Shishkin’s goal was to depict, with complete honesty, the beauty and emotion found within the Russian countryside, and this is one beautiful example. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #RussianArt #RussianArtist #RussianPainter #LandscapePainting #Landscape #Forest #StPetersburg #IvanShishkin #Shishkin #Peredvizhniki #Realism #Realist #Rain
