What a beautiful harp. Arthur Drummond (1871-1951) painted the The Harpist (1890) when he was only 19 years old. Drummond specialized in history and genre scenes. He liked to paint scenes set in ancient Egypt, Greece or Rome. And this painting is such a genre painting set in the ancient world. As far as I know, it does not depict a specific historical or mythological scene. It shows a young woman playing a beautifully-carved harp. In the background, we can see a maid serving a glass of wine. It is painted in a style similar to Lawrence Alma-Tadema, though Drummond’s paintings are not as polished. Drummond started painting at a young age, having learned the craft from his father who was also a painter. And while his works may not be very well known, he created many beautiful scenes like The Harpist during his life. And as we can also see in this painting, he did not shy away from regularly including some nudity. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #BritishArt #BritishArtist #BritishPainter #Drummond #ArthurDrummond #Harp #Harpist #Music #Musician #AncientRome
