A dramatic mythological scene at the entrance to the underworld. Souls on the Banks of the Acheron (1898) is a Symbolist painting by Adolf Hirémy-Hirschl (1860-1933). The Acheron was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld. The newly dead would be ferried across the Acheron by Charon in order to enter the Underworld. In this painting, we see many of the newly dead desperately asking the messenger god Hermes to not hand them over to Charon, who will take them across to their final destination in the underworld. Only some of the children resign in their fate, the other really want to go back to earth to live a bit longer. But Hermes is not impressed and patiently waits until the arrival of Charon and his boat. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #HungarianArt #HungarianArtist #HungarianPainter #HiremyHirschl #Symbolist #Symbolism #Death #Dead #Acheron #Drama #Dramatic
