Spring is here. Flora (1894) was painted by Evelyn De Morgan, a British artist whose paintings contain an air of mystery and spirituality. This work shows a clear parallel to the famous Birth of Venus (c. 1485) by Sandro Botticelli, and it was actually directly inspired by it. De Morgan painted this modern version of the goddess Flora (who is strongly associated with flowers and spring) in Florence, where she and her husband would spend half of the year between 1895 and 1914. The full painting is a bit bigger than shown here and you can find the full image in My Stories, as well as some other paintings by Evelyn de Morgan. Evelyn de Morgan (1855-1919) was more than just an artist, as she also expressed her opinions about societal issues. For example, she supported the suffrage movement to allow women to vote as well, and she took a stance against some of the wars that England was involved in during her life. This work by De Morgan is the first of three artworks by female artists that I will discuss today. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #DeMorgan #EvelyndeMorgan #BritishArt #BritishArtist #BritishPainter #FemaleArtist #FemalePainter #IWD #Flora #Flowers #Florence #Botticelli #Colorful #Spiritual #Activist #Spring
