The way she looks at us... Rosa Mistica (1894) by Francisco Laporta Valor (1850-1914) shows the Virgin Mary in one of her devotional roles. Rosa Mystica typically refers to the various apparitions of the Virgin Mary throughout the 20th century in which she appeared with three roses on her chest: one white, symbolizing prayer; a yellow one, symbolizing penance; and a red one, symbolizing sacrifice. But Mary has been associated with roses long before the 20th century and this painting from 1894 shows that, given its Rosa Mistica inscription behind her throne. It shows Mary indeed in a mystical way, her hands folded in prayer while she looks at the viewer. The Spanish artist Laporta Valor appropriately painted the scene with many patches of light and shadow, adding to the mystical effects of the way she looks at us. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #LaportaValor #Valor #SpanishArt #SpanishArtist #SpanishPainter #VirginMary #Mary #Mystical #Mystic #RosaMistica #Mistica #Apparition #Roses #Rose #Catholic #Christian #Religious #Religion #Throne
