She is so calm in front of the snake. Eve (1896) by Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer (1865–1953) shows how the snake in the Garden of Eden is talking Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. The story of The Beginning of Sin is described in Genesis 3 where the snake approaches Eve and says: "Did God really tell you that you must not eat from any tree in the garden?” Eve has not eaten the fruit yet, and she is thus without sin, which may explain why she looks innocent and unaware of the dangers to come. You can see how the snake is wrapped around the tree, and it is suggested that the snake has already eaten some of the fruit. Lévy-Dhurmer was a French Symbolist artist, who intentionally liked to keep the interpretation of their works a little bit vague. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #Pastel #PastelPainting #Gouache #Gold #FrenchArt #FrenchArtist #FrenchPainter #Eve #LucienLevyDhurmer #LevyDhurmer #Symbolist #Symbolism #ArtNouveau #Serpent #Snake #GardenofEden #Sin #ForbiddenFruit
