You may be surprised to see the title of this work... Painted in 1888 by Jean-Jules-Antoine Lecomte du Nouÿ (1842-1923), this work is titled The White Slave. It provides a peak into an Oriental harem through the eyes of a Frenchman. And just for reference, this was the same year during which Vincent van Gogh painted his famous Sunflowers. We see a white slave with some jewelry in the foreground. But her situation does not seem that bad. She calmly looks around while smoking, and in front of her are some typical Eastern foods like dates, couscous, and orange, and some tea. In the background, two black servants are next to a basin or pool washing some clothes. It is a fictitious painting by the artist, representing some of the Oriental stereotypes that his French clientele had in mind (though there was some truth in the presence of captured slaves in harems). And it also served as an excuse to paint some nudity without bothering about receiving criticism for that. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FrenchArt #FrenchArtist #FrenchPainter #Lecomte #Nouy #LecomteduNouy #White #Slave #Nantes #Museum #Harem #Hammam #Oriental #Orientalism
