Poor Liza (1827) by Orest Kiprensky is a sentimental portrait of a peasant woman who enlightened an entire generation of noble youth in Russia. Her story is based on a tale from 1792 by the Russian writer Karamzin entitled Poor Liza. She is a girl from the village and fell in love with a man from another social class. Kiprensky captures that here in this portrait 35 years later. The pink and white symbolize her purity and youth, and the red carnation her love. But as the title of the book and the painting suggest, the story does not end well, as it will be a tragic love affair ending with the suicide of Liza. It is not entirely clear how much truth there is to the story, but the book became very popular and inspired and enlightened an entire generation of young Russians. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilPaint #OilonCanvas #PoorLiza #PoorLisa #Kiprensky #Russian #Love #LoveAffair #Tragic #Purity #Youth #LoveStory #Inspirational #Inspiration #Sentimental #Sentiment
