Vilmos Aba-Novák (1894–1942): Circus (Card-players) , 1931, Tempera on wood-fiber, 54 x 65.5 cm. (21.3 x 25.8 in.) Circus scenes were among Vilmos Aba-Novák's favorites. 'Card-players' is one of these expressionist paintings with his characteristic dark palette and contrasting bright colours. Aba-Novák uses this powerful contrast of pure colours as well as forms built of massive blocks and steep edges to express his experiences. The artist is interested in the grotesque world of the circus. He shows the funny, ironic side of his complex personality in these paintings. However, sad perspectives of mental dramas open on such high levels of the grotesque as well.
