A monumental work showing mankind's relationship with nature. The Oxbow (1836) by Thomas Cole (1801-1848) captures the tension between the wilderness and civilization. Fully known as View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm, it is one of the most popular American landscape paintings. The left side of the paintings shows the raw nature, largely untouched by humans. Just look at the blasted tree in the left foreground and the dark rain clouds. It shows how nature has its own will. But then the right side of the painting shows a very different view. Bathing is sunlight is a landscape that humans have organized to their will. Grazing animals, growing crops, smoke stacks, and boats all indicate how mankind utilizes the land. This work was created during a time that the United States was expanding westward and more and more pieces of nature were subjugated to the will of the people. Finally, do you see how the artist included himself in the foreground, painting the landscape (it's pretty small)? #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #AmericanArt #AmericanArtist #AmericanPainter #ThomasCole #Cole #Oxbow #TheOxbow #Metropolitan #Museum #Landscape #ConnecticutRiver #Massachusetts #Thunderstom #Nature #Mankind #Wilderness #UnitedStates #American
